32.11The Government also made undertakings for enhanced scrutiny of decisions to ‘opt in’ to measures in areas where, under the Protocol on the position of the United Kingdom and Ireland in respect of the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, the UK was not obliged to participate.1 The UK was also entitled to opt out of matters relating to the Schengen acquis,2 and a similar system applied to such opt-outs.
