30.40When the Commons have returned from the House of Lords to their own Chamber, the Speaker reports that the Royal Assent has been given to certain Acts, and this is recorded in the Votes and Proceedings and Journal.1

The Speaker’s report that the Royal Assent had been given to the Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Act 2019 by commission prior to prorogation on 9 September 2019 was later expunged; the Speaker subsequently announced on 8 October 2019 that the Royal Assent to the same Act had been given by commission prior to the prorogation of the 2017–19 session; see HC Deb (2017–19) 664 c 646 and Votes and Proceedings, 9 October 2019. Most provisions of the Act came into force at the end of the period of six months beginning with the day on which the Act was passed, which is taken to be the later of the two dates.
